In a materialistic world, prosperity is unfortunately and invariably associated with hoards of money and countless possessions...

To the truly prosperous people of this world, however, prosperity is prosperity in its purest and original sense. Prosperity comes from the Latin word spes, which means “hope and vigor.” To the truly prosperous person, being prosperous means being positive and happy in the moment, regardless of the level of wealth one has acquired.

In my book Career Success Without a Real Job, I pointed out that money creates and maintains its own rules. As a general rule, money doesn’t seem to like people who are desperate for it.

To experience more prosperity in your life, you must pay heed to the following rules of money:
7 Spiritual Rules of Money

1. If money becomes your primary focus in life, then money is all that you will get.
2. The person with no money may be poor; however, not as poor as the person who has nothing but money.
3. Abundance isn't a matter of acquiring how much money you desire; it's a matter of being happy with how much you presently have.
4. It's better to be out of money than out of new creative ideas on how to make money.
5. Money-making ideas are gifts from the Universe; you must act fast on them, however, if you want to be prosperous and wealthy.
6. Spending a lot of money - particularly money that you have not yet earned - will get you trapped into thinking you are having a good time when all you are doing is spending a lot of money that you will have a difficult time earning.
7. Above all, the value of money lies in the creative and spiritual uses to which it can be put and not in how many possessions it can buy.

Clearly, true prosperity is living easily and happily in the real world whether you have lots of money or not. I have had the fortune of being on both sides of the fence. I’ve been broke, over $30,000 in debt and having to borrow money to pay the rent.

At one time I even had the sobering experience of sleeping in my car for two cold winter nights when the temperature was -21ºF. Extremely cold, of course, but this is still far from the bottom. As Mike Todd said, “I’ve never been poor, only broke. Being poor is a
state of mind. Being broke is a temporary situation.”

Many years later I am fortunate enough to have a good income, be spending substantially less money than I earn, and investing a nice surplus each year. Having been broke on more than one occasion makes me a lot more grateful for the financial position I enjoy today. Yet I sometimes felt just as prosperous when I was broke as I do today.

In his book, The Seven Laws of Money, Michael Phillips discusses seven interesting money concepts:

* Money creates and maintains its own rules.
* Money will appear when you are doing the right thing in your life.
* Money is a dream - in fact, it can be a fantasy as deceptive as the Pied Piper.
* Money often is a nightmare.
* You can never truly give money away as a gift.
* You can never truly receive money as a gift.
* There are many fascinating worlds (cultures) without money.
