Storage water heaters are the most common and popular type of water heaters for residential heating all over the US. For conventional storage water heaters, you can choose from four different fuels: propane, natural gas, oil and electricity. This storage heater works by releasing hot water from the top of the tank controlled by the hot water tap.
Then cold water enters through the bottom of the tank to replace the hot water and make sure that the tank is always full. But with this type of storage heater, energy is used even when you are not using the water making it expensive to operate.
There are also other newer models that are more energy efficient. You can check the Energy Guide label on the storage heaters. Demand water heaters, also known as instantaneous, can reduce your energy consumption by 20 to 30 percent. They can also completely remove the standby heat losses which is the energy used when you are not using the hot water.
This type of water heater does not need storage tanks. This works by heating the cold water that travels through a pipe into the unit by either an electric element or a gas burner. Heat pump water heaters do not generate heat directly but rather it uses electricity to the heat from one place to another. These work like reverse refrigerators to heat waters for home purposes.
Tankless coil water heaters do not need a separate storage tank. They heat water directly inside the boiler in a hot water heating system. When a hot water tap is turned on, water flows through a heat exchanger in the boiler. This type works well even during those cold winter months because the heating system is used regularly.
If the heating system is used frequently, then this water heater is less efficient to use.
Indirect water heaters, unlike the tankless coil water heaters, require a separate storage tank. However, they both circulate water through a heat exchanger in the boiler, but in this type the heated water flows to the storage tank.
This system is more efficient than the tankless coil because the boiler does not need to operate often. When this water heater is used with a really efficient boiler, you’ll have one of the least costly methods of water heating.
